Devils' Johnny Kovacevic: Questionable for Sunday
Kovacevic (undisclosed) is questionable for Sunday's Game 4 matchup versus Carolina, Mike Morreale of NHL.com reports.
Kovacevic sustained an injury early into Friday's 3-2 double-overtime win over the Hurricanes in Game 3. He hasn't earned a point in three outings this postseason while posting two shots on goal and eight hits. If Kovacevic is out for Sunday's game, Seamus Casey or Dennis Cholowski could draw into the lineup.

Devils' Brenden Dillon: Unavailable for Sunday
Dillon (lower body) won't play in Game 4 versus the Hurricanes on Sunday, Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports.
Dillon will miss his third consecutive game. He had two goals, 16 points, 67 PIM, 191 hits and 108 blocks across 82 regular-season outings in 2024-25. Simon Nemec and Jonas Siegenthaler will probably remain in the lineup for Game 4 due to the continued absences of Dillon and Luke Hughes (upper body).

Palat notched an assist, four hits, three blocked shots and a plus-2 rating in Friday's 3-2 double-overtime win over the Hurricanes in Game 3.
Palat ended a four-game point drought with the helper. The 34-year-old winger is filling a top-six role on paper, though his 22:42 of ice time Friday was by far his highest in three playoff outings. He's added three shots on net, 11 hits, four blocked shots and a plus-2 rating this postseason. Even if Palat stays on the top line, he's there for his overall play rather than just his scoring.

Devils' Timo Meier: Generates helper
Meier posted an assist, three shots on goal and three hits in Friday's 3-2 double-overtime win over the Hurricanes in Game 3.
Meier had been held off the scoresheet in the first two games of the series. While the 28-year-old winger has struggled to score, he has done well with physicality, racking up 11 hits and six PIM as well as 10 shots on net and a minus-2 rating over three playoff outings. He's playing on the top line for now and should continue to do so as long as he can chip in offense occasionally.

Nemec might not even be in the lineup if the Devils were at full health, but they're missing Luke Hughes (upper body) and Brenden Dillon (lower body) and lost Johnny Kovacevic (undisclosed) early in this game. Even with the pressure of his first playoff run, Nemec stepped up to get the Devils back in this series, scoring 2:36 into the second overtime period to secure the win. He's added two PIM, two hits and two blocked shots over two playoff outings.

Devils' Dawson Mercer: Tallies in Game 3 win
Mercer scored a goal on three shots and added three hits in Friday's 3-2 double-overtime win over the Hurricanes in Game 3.
Mercer's first point of the playoffs came at 1:18 of the third period to give the Devils a 2-0 lead. That lead didn't last, but they won in overtime. Mercer is holding down a spot on the second line, and he's upped his physical game in the postseason, racking up 13 hits to go with six shots on net and a minus-1 rating over three contests.

Going down 3-0 in the series would likely have put the Devils out of the playoffs in short order, but Markstrom prevented that with this performance. Devils' Jonas Siegenthaler: Poised to return Friday
Siegenthaler could suit up against the Hurricanes in Game 3 on Friday after head coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters, "He's feeling good and we're optimistic that he'll play," per Mike Morreale of NHL.com.
Keefe did go on to say that Siegenthaler would likely be deployed "in a reduced role with reduced minutes," but all signs point to the Swiss defenseman playing in Game 3. The last step in the process will be for Siegnthaler to be activated off long-term injured reserve prior to puck drop. With Luke Hughes (upper body) and Brenden Dillon (lower body) both out, getting Siegenthaler back will be a huge boost to the Devils' blue line.

Markstrom will get the starting nod at home versus the Hurricanes in Game 3 on Friday, per NHL.com.
Markstrom has put up decent ratios in the previous two postseason contests, registering a 2.52 GAA and a .930 save percentage. Still, that hasn't stopped the veteran netminder from losing both outings and sliding into a four-game losing streak. If he can get some additional offensive support -- the Devils have scored just two goals in their two playoff contests -- Markstrom could break out of the loss column Friday.

Devils' Marc McLaughlin: Among Black Aces
McLaughlin, along with forwards Brian Halonen, Mike Hardman, Nathan Legare, defensemen Topias Vilen and Colton White and netminder Isaac Poulter, was recalled from AHL Utica on Thursday.
McLaughlin saw action in two games for the Devils this year after being acquired from Boston in a minor-league swap at the trade deadline. None of the aforementioned players should be expected to play in a postseason game, barring a string of injuries, but they'll get practice time at the NHL level after the Comets were eliminated from postseason contention.
