Avalanche's Calvin de Haan: Generates assist in loss
De Haan provided an assist and two blocked shots in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Oilers.
The helper ended an 11-game point drought for de Haan. The 33-year-old looks to have overtaken Sam Malinski for a spot in the lineup, though the bottom pairing of the Avalanche's defense could be in flux on a game-to-game basis depending on performance. For the season, de Haan has seven assists, 38 shots on net, 47 hits, 50 blocked shots and a minus-6 rating through 35 appearances.

Avalanche's Joel Kiviranta: Manages assist in loss
Kiviranta notched an assist, two hits and a minus-2 rating in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Oilers.
Kiviranta has three helpers over 10 games since the holiday break. The 28-year-old had five goals across three contests leading into the break, and that uptick in production has earned him a larger role in the Avalanche's middle six as the team deals with some injuries at forward. Kiviranta is at 15 points, 54 shots on net, 73 hits and a plus-5 rating through 46 games this season. As long as he's on the second line, he's worth consideration in fantasy formats that reward his physical play.

Avalanche's Mikko Rantanen: Provides assist in loss
Rantanen notched an assist, two blocked shots and two PIM in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Oilers.
Rantanen helped out on a Logan O'Connor goal in the first period. The 28-year-old Rantanen has six goals and four helpers over 10 contests since the holiday break. He took a turn as the second-line center Thursday, a move the Avalanche haven't used often this season. It's possible he'll be in that spot for a while given Casey Mittelstadt's ongoing struggles. Rantanen is at 25 goals, 37 assists, 127 shots on net and a plus-10 rating over 46 appearances. In any usage, Rantanen figures to see top-six minutes and plenty of power-play time.

MacKinnon still leads the NHL with 72 points (17 goals, 55 assists) while adding 173 shots on net, 41 blocked shots and a plus-16 rating through 46 outings.

Avalanche's Mackenzie Blackwood: First dud in Colorado colors
Blackwood stopped 23 of 27 shots in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Oilers.
Considering the Avalanche had a 3-0 lead just over halfway through the first period, this was an unimpressive performance. This was Blackwood's first bad outing for Colorado -- he had not allowed more than two goals in any of his prior 12 appearances. He's now 15-12-4 with a 2.54 GAA and a .918 save percentage across 32 games between the Avalanche and the Sharks. Colorado's next game is Saturday versus the Stars.

Avalanche's Jason Polin: Back to AHL
Polin was reassigned to AHL Colorado following Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Oilers.
Polin played in two NHL games during his stint with the big club and failed to record a point. His demotion suggests the Avalanche may opt to try a different forward on the fourth line for Saturday's game versus the Stars.

Avalanche's Mackenzie Blackwood: Patrolling crease versus Oilers
Blackwood will man the blue paint against Edmonton at home Thursday, Jesse Montano of Guerilla Sports reports.
Blackwood has been nearly unbeatable since joining Colorado, posting a 9-2-1 record in his 12 outings to go with a 1.68 GAA and .938 save percentage. Even with Scott Wedgewood back from a lower-body injury, fantasy managers should expect to see a heavy dose of Blackwood going forward.

Avalanche's John Ludvig: Designated for waivers
Ludvig was placed on waivers by the Avalanche on Wednesday, Evan Rawal of the Denver Gazette reports.
Ludvig was claimed off waivers by the Avs from the Pens before the start of the 2024-25 campaign, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Pittsburgh put in a claim to try to get the 24-year-old blueliner back. In eight games with Colorado this year, the defenseman has notched two assists, 16 hits and nine shots while averaging 12:57 of ice time. Assuming Ludvig clears waivers, he figures to be sent down to AHL Colorado.

Avalanche's Samuel Girard: Questionable for Thursday
Girard (upper body) is questionable for Thursday's tilt against Edmonton, according to Evan Rawal of the Denver Gazette.
Girard has missed Colorado's past three games and is day-to-day. He has two goals and 18 points in 42 outings in 2024-25. If he does play versus the Oilers, then Calvin de Haan might be a healthy scratch.

Avalanche's Cale Makar: Produces assist Tuesday
Makar registered an assist and two shots on goal in Tuesday's 3-2 overtime win over the Rangers.
Makar helped out on Parker Kelly's opening goal in the first period. This game wasn't all good for Makar -- he mishandled a pass that led to Sam Carrick tying the game on a shorthanded breakaway later in the opening frame. Makar has four points over seven outings in January, but his helper Tuesday snapped a season-worst four-game slump. He has a total of 50 points, which ranks him tied for first with the Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski. Rantanen set up Artturi Lehkonen for the game-tying goal late in the third period. The 28-year-old Rantanen began the game on the second line as head coach Jared Bednar looked to spark an offense that has run a tad inconsistent in January. The star winger is doing his part with four goals and three assists over seven outings this month, and he's up to 25 goals, 36 helpers, 127 shots on net and a plus-11 rating through 45 contests overall.
