  • Colts' Sam Ehlinger: Emergency QB for Week 11

Ehlinger (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Jets but will serve as Indianapolis' emergency quarterback. Ehlinger has yet to take a snap this season and won't count against the Colts' gameday roster limit. However, he'll be eligible to enter the game if Anthony Richardson and Joe Flacco suffer injuries Sunday.

  • Colts' Sam Ehlinger: Emergency third QB Sunday night

Ehlinger (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday Night Football against the Vikings. The 2021 sixth-round pick has yet to appear in a game this season.

  • Colts' Sam Ehlinger: Wins No. 3 QB role

Ehlinger won a spot on Indianapolis' 53-man roster to begin the regular season. He'll remain on the active roster as the third quarterback, but may not see any regular-season action if Anthony Richardson and Joe Flacco are healthy.

  • Colts' Sam Ehlinger: Questionable with shoulder injury

Ehlinger is questionable for Sunday's game against the Rams with a right shoulder injury. Ehlinger was a limited practice participant Thursday and didn't practice Friday, suggesting that he suffered the injury during the week. If available, Ehlinger would be called upon Sunday only if both Anthony Richardson and Gardner Minshew get injured. Richardson has been cleared to start after missing the Colts' Week 3 win over the Ravens while recovering from a concussion.

  • Colts' Sam Ehlinger: Serving as emergency QB

Ehlinger (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's matchup against the Texans, but he'll dress and serve as the Colts' emergency quarterback. Ehlinger doesn't count against the 53-man roster but will be available if Anthony Richardson and Gardner Minshew are forced out of the game. Ehlinger appeared in four games for Indianapolis last year and completed 63 percent of his passes for 573 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.

  • Colts' Sam Ehlinger: Serviceable in emergency duty

Ehlinger replaced an injured Nick Foles (ribs) to open the second half of the Colts' 38-10 loss to the Giants on Sunday and completed nine of 14 passes for 60 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. He also rushed once for 12 yards. The second-year signal-caller's final numbers were respectable and mistake-free, and he even facilitated Indianapolis' only touchdown of the afternoon with a six-yard pass to Michael Pittman late in the third quarter. Ehlinger could be in line for his third start of the season in a Week 18 home matchup against the Texans if Foles is unable to suit up and interim head coach Jeff Saturday opts to keep Matt Ryan as a backup.

  • Colts' Sam Ehlinger: Inactive Sunday

  • Colts' Sam Ehlinger: Replaced by Ryan

Matt Ryan started over Ehlinger in Sunday's game against the Raiders. New head coach Jeff Saturday previously indicated that Ehlinger would remain the team's starting QB in Week 10, but instead the Colts will return to Ryan on Sunday, while Ehlinger is slated to serve as the team's No. 2 signal-caller. Meanwhile, Nick Foles was inactive for the contest.

  • Colts' Sam Ehlinger: Not taking first-team reps

Matt Ryan, and not Ehlinger, was seen taking warmups with the first-team center before Sunday's game against Las Vegas, Zak Keefer of The Athletic reports. It looks like new head coach Jeff Saturday could be making a switch at quarterback with Ryan moving back to the starting role. However, nothing is official yet.

  • Colts' Sam Ehlinger: Struggles in Foxboro

Ehlinger completed 15 of 29 passes for 103 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 26-3 loss to the Patriots. He added five rushes for 39 yards. After a promising first NFL start, Ehlinger looked overwhelmed in Sunday's blowout loss to the Patriots. In addition to averaging only 3.6 yards per attempt, Ehlinger was also sacked nine times. If there is one positive to take from the effort, he was more effective on the ground and showed the potential to be a dual-threat quarterback -- which also aligns with his college profile. Ehlinger should also benefit from a softer matchup against the Raiders in Week 10.

  • Colts' Sam Ehlinger: Efficient in first start

Ehlinger completed 17 of 23 passes for 201 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 17-16 loss to the Commanders. He rushed the ball six times for 15 yards. Ehlinger made his first NFL start, and the team predictably turned to a fairly conservative offense. Nevertheless, he showed the ability to distribute the ball effectively, connecting with three different receivers for gains of at least 20 yards. One surprise was Ehlinger's lack of effectiveness as a runner, as he racked up at least 375 rushing yards in each of his four years in college as a starter at Texas. While this performance was encouraging overall, Ehlinger will face a stiff test in Week 9 as the Colts will head to Foxboro to take on the Patriots.

  • Colts' Sam Ehlinger: Adds/Streamers (QB Preview)

Ehlinger is a start in two-quarterback leagues only for this week. But he has rushing upside as well. He ran for 31 touchdowns in his final three seasons at Texas. If Frank Reich lets him loose on the ground, Ehlinger could be a streaming option in one-quarterback leagues.

  • Colts' Sam Ehlinger: Starter for rest of season

Head coach Frank Reich announced Monday that Ehlinger will serve as the Colts' starting quarterback for the remainder of the season, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Ehlinger, a 2021 sixth-round pick, will get the opportunity to see his first extended action at the NFL level beginning with Sunday's game against the Commanders. Indianapolis got off to a 3-3-1 start with Matt Ryan (shoulder) under the helm, but Reich has decided to bench the 37-year-old veteran in a move unrelated to his injury. The Colts also have 33-year-old former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles in the roster, but Foles doesn't have a long-term future with the team and will serve as the understudy to Ehlinger. The Colts are taking a leap of faith in inserting the unproven 24-year-old as their new starter, but he'll at least get a soft landing spot Week 8 with the home matchup against the 3-4 Commanders.

  • Colts' Sam Ehlinger: Makes 53-man roster

Ehlinger has made Indy's final 53-man roster, 107.5 FM The Fan Indianapolis reports. Ehlinger had a strong preseason by going 24-of-29 for 289 yards passing with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He improved his mechanics and revised what had been seen as a poor throwing motion. He was previously thought to be mostly a running quarterback, but his transformation this preseason has many thinking he could be in Indy's long-term plans. He'll be the No. 3 quarterback to begin the season, but could challenge Nick Foles at some point.

  • Colts' Sam Ehlinger: Another strong preseason showing

Ehlinger was 9-for-11 passing for 136 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in Saturday's preseason loss to Detroit. Ehlinger had a second consecutive strong preseason game. With the Colts signing Nick Foles as Matt Ryan's backup, it's not clear if the team will have a third quarterback on the active roster in the regular season, however.

  • Colts' Sam Ehlinger: In line for No. 2 role Saturday

Ehlinger will play in the primary backup quarterback role in Saturday's preseason game against the Lions, Mike Chappell of Fox 59 News Indianapolis reports. With starter Matt Ryan resting this week and Nick Foles getting the starting nod, Ehlinger is expected to enter the game in the second quarter. Head coach Frank Reich stated Ehlinger would play for a quarter or quarter-and-a-half before Jack Coan finishes the game for the Colts. The 2021 sixth-round pick was impressive in the preseason opener, completing 10 of 11 passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to the Bills. Ehlinger will have an opportunity to build upon his solid performance in his ongoing quest to secure the No. 3 quarterback job.

  • Colts' Sam Ehlinger: Remains in backup role Week 17

Ehlinger will serve as the backup to starting quarterback Carson Wentz (illness) for Sunday's game against the Raiders after head coach Frank Reich told Stacey Dales of NFL Network that Wentz received full medical clearance to play. After Wentz was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Ehlinger took all the reps with the first-team offense in practices Wednesday through Friday and was staying prepared to make his first career start in the event the former wasn't able to clear the NFL's COVID-19 return-to-play protocol prior to Sunday's 1 p.m. ET kickoff. Wentz was activated from the list Saturday after completing the required five-day quarantine, but in order to play against the Raiders, he still needed to show no signs of fever for a 24-hour period plus improved symptoms when re-evaluated earlier Sunday. Since Wentz was able to get the green light during his checkup, he'll now be on tap for the start after he was able to stay on top of the Colts' Week 17 game plan virtually while he was in quarantine. Ehlinger won't be needed unless Wentz suffers an injury at some point during Sunday's contest.

  • Colts' Sam Ehlinger: Will start if Wentz can't

Colts head coach Frank Reich confirmed Wednesday that Ehlinger will start Sunday's game against the Raiders if Carson Wentz (illness) isn't cleared to return from the reserve/COVID-19 list, Mike Wells of ESPN.com reports. Wentz likely will miss the game after landing on the list Tuesday, but the NFL's new COVID-19 return-to-play protocol technically keeps the door open for him to play if he's symptom-free following a five-day isolation period. Ehlinger has been limited to three carries and no pass attempts during the regular season, after completing 21 of 31 throws for 288 yards and three interceptions in three preseason contests. He would offer more of a rushing threat than Wentz, but the quarterback switch would be bad news for anyone relying on wideout Michael Pittman or another Indianapolis pass catcher.
