Vikings' Byron Murphy: Restructures contract
Murphy and the Vikings agreed Tuesday to restructure his contract, pushing the void date of it back to the day before the start of the new league year, Dan Graziano of ESPN.com reports.
The Vikings will no longer be able to use the franchise tag on Murphy this offseason, as his current contract will not end until the day before the start of the new league year, which is after the deadline for use of the tag. The 27-year-old is fresh off of the best season of his career, earning his first Pro Bowl nod, and posting career highs in tackles, passes defended, and interceptions. Considering his success in 2024, he was considered a prime candidate to receive the franchise tag, but the Vikings will now need to re-sign Murphy to a new contract to ensure he remains in Minnesota next season.

Vikings' Byron Murphy: Career-best six INTs in 2024
Murphy finished the 2024 season with 81 tackles (62 solo), 14 pass breakups, including six interceptions, and one forced fumble across 17 regular-season contests.
Murphy didn't miss a single contest for the first time since his 2019 rookie campaign with Arizona. His 81 tackles, 14 pass breakups and six interceptions all marked new career highs for the 27-year-old cornerback, who was named to his first Pro Bowl team. After playing on a two-year, $17.5 million deal, Murphy is again scheduled to head to free agency in March. He'll look to capitalize on his big season and land a multi-year deal in what currently looks like a weak cornerback market.

Murphy has really found his groove in his second season with the Vikings, recording 71 total tackles and 13 passes defended, including six interceptions, which is tied for the third most in the NFL. He's expected to remain Minnesota's top slot cornerback in Week 17 against the Packers.
