France went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a 4-2 win against the Cardinals on Saturday.
France supplied the Padres with their first run on a fifth-inning solo blast. That marked his first long ball since he went deep twice versus Arizona on April 25. France hasn't been getting consistent playing time, and his start Saturday was just his second over San Diego's past six contests. However, the veteran infielder has done well pretty well when called upon, slashing .279/.313/.574 with four home runs, nine runs, 11 RBI and a stolen base through 64 plate appearances.

Padres' Manny Machado: Belts 200th homer as Padre

Machado went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Saturday in a 4-2 victory versus St. Louis.
Machado gave San Diego closer Mason Miller an insurance run with a solo blast in the bottom of the eighth inning. The homer also marked a personal milestone for the veteran third baseman, as it was his 200th regular-season home run since he joined San Diego. Machado entered Saturday having gone 0-for-19 at the plate over his previous five contests, and he's still slashing an uncharacteristic .197/.303/.364 on the season, so he'll look to use his late long ball as a catalyst toward better success at the plate.

Padres' Mason Miller: Continues dominant campaign

Miller picked up a save against the Cardinals on Saturday, allowing two walks and striking out four batters over 1.1 hitless and scoreless innings.
Miller came into Saturday having recorded more than three outs just once over 17 appearances. However, he was called upon in the eighth frame with a St. Louis runner on second base and two outs. Miller ended the inning by inducing a groundout and unsurprisingly was back on the mound for the ninth. He got himself into a bit of trouble with a pair of walks, then uncorked a wild pitch on a strikeout to allow the batter to reach first base and load the bases, but Miller ultimately escaped with the save by getting JJ Wetherholt to strike out. The All-Star closer has been utterly dominant so far this season, going 12-for-12 on save chances while allowing just two earned runs and racking up an absurd 38:5 K:BB over 18.2 innings spanning 18 outings.

Padres' Randy Vasquez: Improves to 4-1

Vasquez (4-1) earned the win over St. Louis on Saturday, allowing one run on six hits and no walks while striking out six batters over five innings.
Vasquez surrendered just one extra-base hit in the contest -- a fourth-inning Nathan Church double that also produced the lone run against the hurler. He needed 94 pitches to get through five frames, which prevented Vasquez from pushing toward a quality start, but this was otherwise a strong outing by the right-hander. Vasquez had stepped back a bit in his previous two starts, yielding a combined eight runs over 10.2 frames, but he began the season strongly and still carries a nice 3.05 ERA and 1.17 WHIP along with a 42:13 K:BB through 44.1 innings spanning eight starts. He's been huge for the Padres' rotation this season and is next lined up for a road tilt in Milwaukee.
Padres' Lucas Giolito: Covers four frames in MiLB start

Giolito covered four innings Tuesday in a start for Double-A San Antonio, yielding five runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out two batters.
Making his third start in the minors after signing a one-year deal with the Padres on April 22, Giolito was able to push up his pitch count to 78. Between Tuesday's start and his previous two appearances with Single-A Lake Elsinore, Giolito has posted a 6.55 ERA, 1.91 WHIP and 12:6 K:BB over 11 innings. The 31-year-old righty will need to be added to the Padres' 26-man active roster by May 16, so he could be in line for one more tune-up outing in the minors before entering the San Diego rotation.
Canning (0-1) allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five over 4.1 innings to take the loss versus the Cardinals on Friday.
Canning was doing fairly well until the fifth inning. He loaded the bases in that frame, and a fielding error by Fernando Tatis led to JJ Wetherholt getting a Little League home run to unload them. Canning then proceeded to load the bases again, and Yuki Matsui allowed two inherited runners to score. This wasn't a great second audition for Canning to stay in the rotation, but the Padres have a number of underwhelming pitchers looking to maintain starting roles. He's allowed seven runs with a 12:5 K:BB across 9.1 innings over his two starts this season. If the right-hander gets another start, it'll likely be on the road in Milwaukee.

Canning will be awarded another turn through the rotation after a sharp showing in his team and season debut last Sunday. Making his first MLB appearance since June 26, 2025 with the Mets, Canning struck out seven and yielded one earned run on three hits and three walks over five innings in a no-decision against the White Sox. The Padres' rotation will get additional reinforcements next week with Lucas Giolito likely to be called up from the minors, but another steady performance Friday should put Canning in good position to maintain his spot over Walker Buehler (5.64 ERA in 30.1 innings) or Matt Waldron (7.71 ERA in 18.2 innings).
King allowed one run on one hit and two walks while striking out six over six innings in a no-decision versus the Cardinals on Thursday.
King's lone mistake ended up over the fence when Alec Burleson took him deep in the fourth inning. Other than that, it was an excellent performance for King, who came away with his fourth quality start of the season despite failing to get the win. The right-hander has also limited opponents to one run or fewer in four of his outings this season. He's at a 2.76 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 45:20 K:BB through 45.2 innings across eight starts. His 3.9 BB/9 is the highest of his career, while his 8.8 K/9 is his lowest since 2021, when he was still working as a reliever, but neither mark has been an issue yet. King's next start is projected to be on the road in Milwaukee.
The Padres transferred Musgrove (elbow) to the 60-day injured list Thursday.
The Padres added Luis Campusano to the 10-day injured list and selected Rodolfo Duran from Triple-A El Paso on Thursday as part of corresponding moves. Musgrove has been progressing slowly in his attempt to return from the Tommy John surgery he had in late 2024.

It has yet to be revealed how Campusano fractured the toe, but he's likely to spend more than the 10-day minimum on the shelf. He had been hitting the ball well to begin the season but was unable to secure the everyday catching job due to Freddy Fermin's superior work behind the plate. Fermin will likely continue to get more starts with Campusano on the injured list while Rodolfo Duran, who had his contract selected from Triple-A El Paso on Thursday, serves as the backup catcher.

After struggling to a 9.88 ERA over his first three starts this year, the Padres elected to use an opener ahead of Waldron on Wednesday. The move paid immediate dividends, as Waldron was nearly untouchable in the San Diego victory -- the Giants' lone run came on a Rafael Devers solo homer in the fifth. Despite Wednesday's performance, it remains to be seen what Waldron's role will be going forward, as Lucas Giolito is expected to join the rotation soon.
