Yankees' Anthony Volpe: Swats third spring homer
Volpe went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Thursday's Grapefruit League win over the Orioles.
Volpe went deep to left-center field in the sixth inning. The 23-year-old is tied for third on the Yankees with three long balls this spring and is tied for the team lead with three stolen bases. Volpe is batting just .200 in spring play, but he's locked in as New York's primary shortstop and appears slated to hit in the middle of the team's order on a near-everyday basis.

Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Likely to start season on IL
Schmidt (shoulder) is likely to begin the season on the 15-day injured list, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.
Schmidt felt good during a 32-pitch live batting practice session Thursday and recovered well Friday. However, he admitted that taking his first turn in the regular-season rotation would "handcuff" the club since he's not fully stretched out. As long as he continues to trend in a good direction, Schmidt's stint on the IL should be brief. With Schmidt out, both Carlos Carrasco and Will Warren should be part of the Yankees' Opening Day rotation.

Yankees' Will Warren: Still in running for rotation spot
Warren will likely open the campaign in the Yankees' rotation if Clarke Schmidt (shoulder) begins the season on the injured list, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Warren has been battling for a rotation spot all spring, as injuries to Gerrit Cole (elbow) and Luis Gil (lat) have depleted New York's starting pitching depth. Carlos Carrasco's impressive spring is likely to earn him a rotation spot, and Marcus Stroman seems to be a lock for a starting role as well, but Warren may still have a place in the rotation if Schmidt -- who has pitched in only one Grapefruit League game but did throw live batting practice Thursday -- isn't ready for his first scheduled start. Warren struggled in his most recent outing Thursday against Baltimore, allowing four runs and serving up two homers in 3.2 innings, but he's been mostly impressive this spring and has good numbers overall, including a 4.19 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 19:5 K:BB over 19.1 frames.

Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Expected back Saturday
Goldschmidt (back) said Friday that he expects to return to the lineup for Saturday's Grapefruit League game versus the Phillies, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Goldschmidt missed his target date to return, as he had hoped to play Thursday or Friday. However, he said his sore back is close to 100 percent and the decision was made to give it another day. Goldschmidt remains confident he'll be ready to go for Opening Day.

Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Remains out Friday
Goldschmidt (back) remains out of the Yankees' lineup for Friday's contest against the Tigers, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
Goldschmidt had eyed either Thursday or Friday for his return to Grapefruit League play, but that goal wasn't met. It's not cause for concern yet, as the Yankees could just be exercising extra caution with the first baseman. The club might have more on Goldschmidt's status later Friday.

Yankees' Brandon Leibrandt: Booted from big-league camp
The Yankees reassigned Leibrandt to minor-league camp Thursday.
Leibrandt was making a good case to be part of the Yankees' Opening Day bullpen with a 2.19 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 12.1 innings in spring training. However, the 32-year-old southpaw owns a 5.28 ERA through 15.1 career MLB innings, so the team will likely need to see him continue his hot stretch in the minors before giving him the call to New York.

Yankees' Carlos Carrasco: Another great audition for rotation
Carrasco pitched five scoreless innings in a Grapefruit League game against Atlanta on Wednesday, allowing two hits and issuing one walk while striking out three batters.
Carrasco allowed a single to the first batter he faced, then retired the next six hitters and ended up allowing just four baserunners in the outing. The veteran righty was efficient in needing just 54 pitches to get through five frames, and he lowered his spring ERA to 1.69. Carrasco also has a 0.94 WHIP and 15:7 K:BB over 16 innings during the exhibition slate, and he's likely to have earned a spot in New York's season-opening rotation due to his superb spring.

Yankees' Jazz Chisholm: Displays power, speed in spring win
Chisholm went 2-for-3 with a home run, three total RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's Grapefruit League victory against Philadelphia.
Chisholm is slashing just .179/.273/.359 this spring, but he reminded Yankees fans (and fantasy managers) of his dynamic skill set with a two-run homer and a swipe of second base Wednesday. The 27-year-old posted career highs with 24 long balls and 40 thefts last season, and he will look to build upon those numbers in his first full campaign with New York in 2025. Chisholm is slated to be the Yankees' primary second baseman, and he's a candidate to bat leadoff for the team this year after hitting mostly in the middle of the order following his trade to New York last season.

Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Posts strong start Wednesday
Stroman tossed three scoreless innings in a Grapefruit League game against Philadelphia on Wednesday, allowing one hit and issuing one walk while striking out three batters.
The only hit Stroman allowed was an infield single, though he did display a bit of wildness by walking two batters and plunking another. That led to him needing 64 pitches to get through three frames, but the overall results were mostly positive as the veteran righty prevented the Phillies from crossing the plate. Stroman struggled early this spring, but he's since bounced back and has a tolerable 4.66 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 7:2 K:BB over 9.2 spring innings. He's a leading candidate to open the season in the Yankees' rotation, due in part to long-term injuries to Gerrit Cole (elbow) and Luis Gil (lat).

Yankees' Jorbit Vivas: Optioned to Triple-A
The Yankees optioned Vivas to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday.
Vivas enjoyed a fair amount of success over his 10 spring training games, going 10-for-25 with three RBI and two runs scored. He'll return to the minors to begin the 2025 season, but he could make a push for the majors if his bat remains hot.

Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Targeting Friday return
Manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that the team hopes to have Goldschmidt (back) back in the lineup Friday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Goldschmidt will participate in baseball activities Thursday, and if he manages to get through everything without a problem, he'll return to the starting nine Friday against the Tigers. The veteran first baseman has been great in the Grapefruit League this spring, going 10-for-32 with three homers, 10 RBI and seven runs scored in 13 games.

Yankees' Tyler Matzek: Throwing bullpen Thursday
Matzek (oblique) has resumed his throwing program and is scheduled for a bullpen session Thursday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Matzek was diagnosed with an oblique strain in early March, and he could start the regular season on the injured list. He threw a bullpen Monday and will need to have more sessions without suffering a setback before facing live hitters. Matzek appeared in 11 regular-season games for Atlanta in 2024 and posted a 9.90 ERA and 1.90 WHIP across 10 innings after missing most of the season due to an elbow issue.

Yankees' Mark Leiter: Faces hitters Wednesday
Leiter (back) completed an 18-pitch live batting practice session Wednesday, Jack Curry of YES Network reports.
Leiter said after the workout that he feels ready to go for Opening Day, but the Yankees will likely want to see him pitch in at least one or two more Grapefruit League or minor-league games this spring before locking him into their bullpen to begin the season. The right-hander last pitched in the Grapefruit League on March 6 before the back injury cropped up.

Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Might not be ready for first start
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Schmidt (shoulder) will not be built up to 75-to-80 pitches for the start of the season, Jack Curry of YES Network reports.
Curry adds that the Yankees are likely to be cautious with Schmidt, so it's possible, if not probable, that he won't be ready for his first turn in the rotation April 3 versus the Diamondbacks. If Schmidt is indeed not ready, both Carlos Carrasco and Will Warren could open the season in the Yankees' rotation. Schmidt will throw a live batting practice session Thursday as he works his way back from a shoulder issue and a potential absence for the righty could be brief if he avoids setbacks.

Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Expected back Thursday or Friday
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that he expects Goldschmidt (back) to return to the lineup Thursday or Friday, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.
Goldschmidt had to depart Monday's Grapefruit League contest against the Blue Jays due to a sore back, which is an injury he'd been battling through for a few days. As long as the veteran first baseman avoids a setback, there's no worry about his Opening Day readiness.

Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Slated for live BP on Thursday
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Schmidt (shoulder) is slated to throw a live batting practice session Thursday, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.
The Yankees had left open the possibility that Schmidt would start Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta, but the team has opted to have him throw in a more controlled setting instead. Schmidt should be able to get in a start after that, whether it's in Grapefruit League play or in a minor-league game. The hope is that Schmidt will be ready for his season debut April 3 versus the Diamondbacks, but Boone said it's not a guarantee.

Yankees' J.C. Escarra: In line to serve as backup catcher
Escarra has a "stranglehold" on the Yankees' backup catcher job behind starter Austin Wells, Jack Curry of YES Network reports.
Escarra has crushed the ball this spring, sporting a 1.032 OPS with three home runs in 14 Grapefruit League contests. The 29-year-old is on the 40-man roster but will be making his major-league debut when he gets into a game. Ben Rice will also be on the Opening Day roster and is capable of catching, but he's likely to focus mostly on designated hitter duties.

Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Nearing live action
Schmidt (shoulder) could start Wednesday's Grapefruit League game at the Phillies, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
There were positive reports after Schmidt threw a 24-pitch bullpen session Monday and again Tuesday morning, as Schmidt noted his shoulder felt good the day after. Even if cleared to be in the season-opening rotation, the right-hander would likely have some workload limitations early on, as manager Aaron Boone admitted Tuesday that "he's obviously not going to be built up," per Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News. Schmidt staying behind in Florida to get stretched out for an extra week or two at the start of the season is also being considered.

Yankees' Ben Rice: Continues to mash
Rice went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays.
Rice has homered in back-to-back games as he continues to build his case for a spot on the club's Opening Day roster. He slotted in behind the dish Monday after serving as the designated hitter Sunday, putting his versatility on full display. Rice would likely get looks at first base, catcher and in the DH spot if he were to make the big-league club out of camp.
