  • Guardians' David Fry: Taking dry swings

Fry (elbow) was cleared to begin taking dry swings Wednesday.

The Guardians sent Fry to the 60-day IL in February, which ensures he'll be out until at least May 26. Depending on how quickly he progresses through the rest of his rehab from November elbow surgery, he may be ready to contribute as a DH by then, though he won't have any hope of playing in the field or behind the plate until 2026.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Sent to 60-day IL

Cleveland placed Fry (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Wednesday.

The transaction doesn't come as a surprise, after Fry underwent surgery in November to address a torn ligament in his elbow. Fry is expected to need 6-to-8 months to recover from surgery before he's ready to serve as a designated hitter, so he could have a chance at being ready to contribute for Cleveland when he's first eligible to come off the 60-day IL in late May. The 29-year-old will require 12 months of recovery time before he's cleared for full throwing, so he won't be an option behind the plate or in the field in 2025.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Elbow responding well

Fry's surgically repaired elbow is responding well to treatment, and he's due for his next re-check in March.

Fry was limited to DH duty for the Guardians toward the end of the season in 2024. It's unclear if he'll get a chance to play behind the plate at all when he returns. If not, Fry will lose his catcher eligibility in 2026 leagues.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Undergoes UCL surgery on elbow

Fry underwent surgery Monday to repair the UCL in his right elbow, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.

Fry initially injured his elbow in June but played through it for the rest of the season, although he was limited to designated hitter duty almost exclusively. He is expected to be ready to DH again in 6-to-8 months, but it will be 12 months before he's able to play the field again. Fry batted .263/.356/.448 with 14 homers during the regular season for the Guardians.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Getting elbow checked out

Fry will have his right elbow examined by Dr. Keith Meister in Texas next week, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.

Fry had to exit a game back in late June due to right elbow inflammation. While he didn't require any additional time off, he made just one start at catcher and zero starts in the outfield after the injury. It's not yet clear whether he might need surgery, but more information on his status should be available following next week's exam. Fry slashed .263/.356/.448 with 14 home runs over 122 games during the regular season before adding an .869 OPS and two more homers during the playoffs for the Guardians.
