  • Astros' Yainer Diaz: Taking seat Tuesday

Diaz is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's contest in Tampa Bay. It's the first day off in May for Diaz, who is in a 3-for-26 rut at the dish. Victor Caratini will handle catching duties and bat fifth for the Astros.

  • Astros' Yainer Diaz: Pops fifth homer

Diaz went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Sunday against the Rangers. Diaz popped his fifth home run of the season, three of which have come in May. He's provided well-rounded production across 16 games in the month, as he's hitting .292 with 10 RBI and seven runs scored. All of Diaz's overall numbers are lagging relative to expectations, but he has gotten on track at the plate after a poor start to the campaign.

  • Astros' Yainer Diaz: Goes deep in win

Diaz went 1-for-5 with a three-run homer in Sunday's win over the Reds. Diaz got the scoring started with his three-run shot in the third inning. It was his fourth home run of the year and first since May 2. Sunday was Diaz's 34th appearance of the season, and it's been a tale of two halves to begin his 2025 campaign. After posting an ugly .404 OPS through the first 17 games, he's gone 22-for-67 (.328) with three homers and 14 RBI over his last 17 contests. Diaz's OPS now sits at .652 through 135 plate appearances.

Diaz went 1-for-5 with a double and two RBI on Wednesday. Diaz capped off a nine-run effort from the Astros' lineup, sending a double to left field to drive in two in the ninth inning. That extended his hitting streak to six games, during which he's gone 9-for-25 with four RBI, one home run and four runs scored. Diaz is still hitting just .222 across 121 plate appearances for the season, but his performance is picking up.

  • Astros' Yainer Diaz: Big game in loss

Diaz went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, an RBI double and two total runs scored in Friday's 7-3 loss to the White Sox. Diaz was the engine of the Astros' offense in this loss, but his contributions weren't enough. The catcher's bat has been warming up lately with three multi-hit efforts over his last seven games. Overall, he's up to a .208/.232/.365 slash line with three homers, 14 RBI, 10 runs scored, four doubles, one triple and no stolen bases over 99 plate appearances. Diaz had some struggles early in 2024 as well, but he's been one of the better offensive catchers in baseball over the last two seasons.

  • Astros' Yainer Diaz: Getting breather Sunday

Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Angels. Victor Caratini will receive the starting nod behind the dish while Diaz rests for a day game after a night game. Though he went 0-for-4 in Saturday's 4-1 loss, Diaz busted out of his slump in a big way in the series opener Friday, going 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, five RBI and an additional run in the Astros' 14-3 victory.

  • Astros' Yainer Diaz: Sitting Wednesday

Diaz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mariners. Diaz has been one of the bigger disappointments among fantasy catchers so far this season; he's gone 2-for-33 with no home runs, one RBI and one run scored through the Astros' first 11 games. Though Diaz will be given a breather for the day game after a night game, the Astros will likely continue to allow the 26-year-old to play through his struggles, given the strong production he's provided over the past two seasons.
