  • Reds' Austin Wynns: Homers again Wednesday

Wynns went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBI in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Marlins. The 34-year-old backstop isn't known for his bat -- Wynns came into the season with a career .609 OPS in 673 big-league plate appearances -- but he's gone yard in back-to-back starts while piling up an incredible nine hits and eight RBI between the two games. Tyler Stephenson (oblique) began a rehab assignment Tuesday and should return next week, but Wynns is trying to make the case that he should stick around over Jose Trevino as the Reds' No. 2 catcher. That's an uphill battle for Wynns given that Trevino inked a three-year, $15 million extension in March and himself is batting .308 this season.

  • Reds' Austin Wynns: Cracks homer, six total hits

Wynns went 6-for-7 with a homer, six RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's 24-2 rout over Baltimore. Wynns -- Cincinnati's backup catcher -- opened the game's scoring in the second inning with an RBI single and also plated the last runs with a three-run homer off Gary Sanchez in the ninth. In between, the 34-year-old knocked four additional singles to become the first Red with six hits in a regular-season game since Phil Ervin on July 13, 2019. The incredible career-best performance pushed Wynns' slash line to .455/.500/.727 over 27 plate appearances this season.

  • Reds' Austin Wynns: Getting seventh start of season

Wynns will start at catcher and bat ninth in Thursday's game against the Mariners. With Jose Trevino resting for the day game after a night game, Wynns will crack the lineup for the seventh time in 19 games on the season. Wynns is batting .308 with a home run and two walks over 15 plate appearances, but he owns a .271 wOBA and 67 wRC+ across parts of seven seasons in the big leagues and doesn't profile as an appealing fantasy option. He'll likely lose his spot on the roster once Tyler Stephenson (oblique) is cleared to return from the injured list.

  • Reds' Austin Wynns: Makes season-opening roster

The Reds selected Wynns' contract from Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday. Wynns will open the season as the Reds' No. 2 catcher, with Jose Trevino serving as the primary starter behind the plate while Tyler Stephenson (oblique) is on the injured list. Once Stephenson is ready to be activated from the IL, Wynns will likely be cast off the 40-man roster.

  • Reds' Austin Wynns: Roster chance improves

Wynns' chances of making the roster improved this week after injuries to Tyler Stephenson (oblique) and Jose Trevino (hand), Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. In the span of three days, Wynns went from the outside looking in to appearing to have a spot on the Opening Day roster. Trevino's injury is less severe than Stephenson, who is facing a multiple-week absence, so Wynns may be the primary backup. The Reds could also scan the market for veteran catchers.

  • Reds' Austin Wynns: Hitless in spring debut

Wynns (shoulder) went 0-for-2 with a strikeout in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Giants in Cactus League action. Wynns made his spring debut Sunday, making his return to game action for the first time since undergoing shoulder surgery in July. The catcher appeared in seven games with the Reds in 2024, batting .368 with four doubles, two RBI and three runs scored over seven games.

  • Reds' Austin Wynns: Back with Cincinnati on MiLB deal

The Reds re-signed Wynns (shoulder) to a minor-league contract Jan. 13. Wynns, 34, spent most of the 2024 season at Triple-A Louisville and suffered a season-ending teres major tear in his right shoulder in late July during one of his seven games with the Reds. It's not clear whether he'll be healthy for the start of spring training, but either way he's slated to begin 2025 at Louisville.

  • Austin Wynns: Elects free agency

Wynns (shoulder) declined his outright assignment to Triple-A Louisville on Saturday and elected free agency. Wynns spent the majority of last season in Triple-A, where he slashed .250/.309/.410 across 110 plate appearances. However, a teres major tear in his right shoulder cut his season short toward the end of July. It's unknown if he'll be ready for the start of spring training, but the 33-year-old backstop should be able to at least net a minor-league deal in free agency.

  • Reds' Austin Wynns: Outrighted to Triple-A

The Reds outrighted Wynns to Triple-A Louisville on Friday. Wynns is not on the 40-man roster but will remain in the organization for now. The veteran catcher suffered a right teres major tear in his right shoulder in late July and it's not clear whether he will be healthy for the start of spring training.

  • Reds' Austin Wynns: Rehab assignment scheduled

Wynns (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Sept. 17, MLB.com reports. Wynns suffered a right teres major tear but was recently cleared to throw to bases. He is on the 60-day injured list and not eligible to return until Sept. 27, two days before the end of the season. While it's possible he could make a late-season return, it wouldn't seem to be a given that he's added to the Reds' roster.

  • Reds' Austin Wynns: Moved to 60-day IL

The Reds transferred Wynns (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Friday. The move doesn't officially end Wynns' season, though the catcher won't be eligible for reinstatement until Sept. 27 -- two days before the Reds' regular-season finale. Wynns sustained a right teres major strain in late July and has been on the shelf since. Luke Maile should continue to work behind Tyler Stephenson at catcher for Cincinnati.

  • Reds' Austin Wynns: Suffers torn shoulder

The Reds placed Wynns on the 10-day injured list Monday with a right teres major tear. Per Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer, Wynns sustained the injury at some point in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Rays, which may explain in part why Tampa Bay went 4-for-4 on stolen-base attempts while the catcher was behind the dish. Even if Wynns doesn't require surgery to address the injury, he'll likely be sidelined for beyond the minimum 10 days, and he could even be at risk of missing the rest of the season. The Reds called up Eric Yang from Triple-A Louisville to replace Wynns on the active roster as the backup to No. 1 catcher Tyler Stephenson.

  • Reds' Austin Wynns: Cut from 40-man roster

The Reds designated Wynns for assignment Tuesday. Wynns was up as protection at catcher for a few days while Tyler Stephenson was away but is no longer needed with the latter back in the fold. He cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Louisville last month, and he seems likely to do so again.

  • Reds' Austin Wynns: Rejoining Cincinnati

The Reds selected Wynns' contract from Triple-A Louisville on Friday. The 33-year-old will rejoin the Reds with starting catcher Tyler Stephenson being placed on the paternity list. Wynns is slashing .250/.309/.410 with 16 RBI this season in Louisville.

  • Reds' Austin Wynns: Pushed off 40-man

The Reds designated Wynns for assignment Sunday. Just two days after having his contract selected from Louisville, Wynns will once again lose his spot on the 40-man roster without appearing in a game for the Reds. With a .726 OPS in the minors, it's possible he receives some attention on the waiver wire, but his .597 career OPS in the majors makes it likely he gets sent outright to Louisville. Livan Soto was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

  • Reds' Austin Wynns: Dealing with sore shoulder

Wynns is battling shoulder soreness, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Wynns is still able to hit, but the shoulder injury has impacted his ability to play behind the dish. At the moment there is no telling how long Wynns will be out, but his injury could significantly harm his chances at making the Reds' Opening Day roster.

  • Reds' Austin Wynns: Clears waivers, will be NRI

Wynns cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Louisville on Thursday. Wynns is no longer on the Reds' 40-man roster but will be in major-league camp as a non-roster invitee. The veteran catcher is likely to be assigned to Louisville at the outset of the 2024 campaign.

  • Rockies' Austin Wynns: Gets start at catcher

Wynns is in the lineup Wednesday against the Cubs. Wynns will make his fifth appearance in a 10-game span. The catcher will have started in four of those games. The 32-year-old is starting in Elias Diaz's place.

  • Rockies' Austin Wynns: Claimed by Colorado

The Rockies claimed Wynns off waivers Thursday, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. Wynns was designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Sunday, though it didn't take him long to find a new home. He's already played for the Dodgers and Giants this season and will likely slot in as organizational depth in Colorado behind Elias Diaz and Brian Serven.

  • Dodgers' Austin Wynns: Inks major-league deal

Wynns agreed to a major-league contract with the Dodgers on Sunday, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports. The 32-year-old elected free agency Friday after being designated for assignment by the Giants, and he quickly found a new home with Will Smith (concussion) headed to the 7-day injured list. Austin Barnes should serve as the Dodgers' primary backstop while Smith is out, with Wynns filling the backup role.
