  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Run over by Dodgers

Alcantara (2-3) took the loss Tuesday as the Marlins were routed 15-2 by the Dodgers, surrendering seven runs on seven hits and five walks over 2.2 innings. He struck out two. It was a disastrous outing right from the jump for Alcantara, as Shohei Ohtani roped the first pitch he saw from the right-hander down the right-field line for a leadoff homer. Alcantara got the hook after 79 pitches (43 strikes), and it's the second time in his last three trips to the mound that he's been tagged for at least six runs. The Marlins' gamble on waiting to trade Alcantara until he showed he was fully recovered from Tommy John surgery hasn't paid off -- through six starts and 26 innings, he carries a brutal 8.31 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 19:17 K:BB. He'll be tough to trust in an active fantasy lineup until he begins to show signs of life, but things won't get any easier for Alcantara in his next outing, a scheduled rematch with the Dodgers early next week back in Miami.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Takes loss in quality start

Alcantara (2-2) took the loss Wednesday, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks over six innings as the Marlins were downed 5-2 by the Reds. He struck out four. The quality start was the first of the season for Alcantara, who needed 102 pitches (68 strikes) to cover six innings for the first time in 2025. The 29-year-old righty is still trying to regain his form after Tommy John surgery, and he'll carry a 6.56 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 17:12 K:BB through 23.1 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week against the Dodgers.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Chased after second inning

Alcantara (2-1) took the loss against the Phillies on Friday, allowing six runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one in two innings. Alcantara put the Marlins on their back foot when he gave up a two-run homer to Bryce Harper in the first inning. Alcantara yielded four more runs in the second frame, and he did not return for the third inning after tossing 61 pitches (40 strikes) while generating only five whiffs. Friday's effort inflated Alcantara's ERA to 7.27 for the season, and he'll look to turn things around in his next start, tentatively slated for next week at home against the Reds.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Earns second win of 2025

Alcantara (2-0) got the win against the Nationals on Saturday, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks while striking out one batter across 5.2 innings. Alcantara went nine up, nine down through the first three innings, but he ran into trouble in the fourth when he allowed three runs after loading up the bases. He gave up a fourth run in the sixth inning on an Amed Rosario RBI single, and despite generating only three whiffs on 87 pitches (53 strikes), Alcantara was provided enough run support from the Marlins' offense to come away with his second win of the season. Alcantara has posted a 4.70 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 12:8 K:BB across 15.1 innings to begin the season, and his next start is tentatively slated for next week at home against the Diamondbacks.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Back from paternity leave

The Marlins reinstated Alcantara (personal) from the paternity list Thursday. Alcantara will rejoin the Marlins for their home series with the Nationals this weekend after he was away from the team for the past three days following the birth of his child. He's slated to start Saturday's game in what will be his third outing of the season and his first since April 1, after his previously scheduled start last weekend against Atlanta was rained out.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Next start coming Saturday

Alcantara will be reinstated from the paternity list Friday and is penciled in to make his next start Saturday against the Nationals, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. Alcantara was originally set to start Sunday against Atlanta, but that game got rained out, and the right-hander went on the paternity list the next day. He'll get another day to rest after he returns to the active roster Friday, which will make Saturday's outing his first appearance in 12 days. He'll be welcomed back by a Washington offense that currently ranks 10th in the majors with a .722 OPS.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Placed on paternity list

The Marlins placed Alcantara on the paternity list Monday. Alcantara had a scheduled start Sunday versus Atlanta rained out and he will now likely miss the full three-game set against the Mets that begins Monday before rejoining the rotation Friday versus the Nationals. Valente Bellozo was called up from Triple-A Jacksonville to start Monday in New York.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Headed for paternity leave

Alcantara won't start Monday against the Mets, as he's set to be placed on the paternity list, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. The right-hander appeared set to take the hill Monday in Queens after his scheduled start Sunday at Atlanta was postponed due to inclement weather, but he'll instead step away from the team for a few days to be with his growing family. Alcantara should be back with the Marlins to pitch Friday versus the Nationals at home.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Miami-Atlanta postponed Sunday

Alcantara won't start as scheduled Sunday against Atlanta after the game was postponed due to inclement weather. The right-hander had given up four earned runs with an 11:4 K:BB over 9.2 innings through two starts this season, but his next turn through the rotation will be pushed back due to the rainout Sunday. Alcantara is likely to take the mound for Monday's series opener against the Mets in New York.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Picks up victory

Alcantara (1-0) allowed two runs on three hits over five innings Tuesday, striking out four and earning a win over the Mets. Alcantara coughed up a solo shot to Brandon Nimmo in the second inning and an RBI single to Francisco Lindor in the third. Alcantara tossed 91 pitches against the Pirates on Opening Day but was limited to just 70 pitches (43 strikes) Tuesday against the Mets. Through two starts, he's produced a 3.72 ERA with an 11:4 K:BB over 9.2 innings. Alcantara's next start is projected to be a rematch with the Mets in New York next week.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: No-decision on Opening Day

Alcantara didn't factor into the decision in Thursday's game against the Pirates. He allowed two runs on two hits and four walks while striking out seven across 4.2 innings. Alcantara was in total control through the first four innings of Opening Day, including the third frame when he followed up a leadoff walk with three consecutive strikeouts. The right-hander started the fifth inning strong with two straight punchouts, but he allowed the next three hitters to reach before giving up a two-run single to Bryan Reynolds to end his day. Despite the underwhelming finish, it was an encouraging season debut as Alcantara made his first MLB appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery late in 2023. He understandably showed some signs of rust but still generated 16 swinging strikes on 91 pitches.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Final tune-up on back field Friday

Alcantara is expected to build up to 80-to-90 pitches while pitching in a minor-league game Friday, Chuck King of MLB.com reports. It should be Alcantara's last outing of the spring before he takes mound for the Marlins on Opening Day. The right-hander has been impressive in camp in his return from Tommy John surgery, posting a 0.00 ERA and 10:3 K:BB over 12.1 Grapefruit League innings, and if he shows he's back to something close to his Cy Young form, it might serve to increase the trade package Miami can get for him this summer.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Building up pitch count

Alcantara gave up two unearned runs on four hits over 2.2 innings in Monday's split-squad game against the Nationals. He struck out three without walking a batter. The right-hander tossed 57 pitches (33 strikes) as he continues building up ahead of an Opening Day assignment for the Marlins. Alcantara missed the entire 2024 campaign while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he worked over 180 innings each of the prior three seasons, and manager Clayton McCullough indicated over the weekend that Miami's ace would not face a hard innings limit in 2025. Alcantara hasn't done anything this spring to suggest he needs one, posting a 0.00 ERA and 8:2 K:BB over 8.1 innings.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Skipper says no innings limit

Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said Sunday on the Marlins Radio Network that "no innings limit" has been set for Alcantara this season. The skipper backed up comments from Alcantara himself, who said Saturday that the team hadn't informed him of any innings restrictions. That contradicts an earlier report from Jeff Passan of ESPN.com. The right-hander missed all of last season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, but he had a relatively normal offseason and is poised to start Opening Day for the Marlins.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Hasn't been informed of limits

Alcantara said Saturday that the team hasn't told him he will be under any inning restrictions this season, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports. Alcantara's comments directly contradict a report from Jeff Passan of ESPN.com that states the 29-year-old righty will be on an innings limit early in the year. Amid all the uncertainty, the truth is more likely to come from the man himself, though he doesn't have full say over his deployment. It would make some sense for Alcantara to gradually build up his workload during the season after missing all of 2024 following Tommy John surgery.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Hits triple digits Friday

Alcantara threw two pitches that reached 100 mph during Friday's Grapefruit League start against Atlanta, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. The 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner tossed 30 pitches in total over two scoreless innings, giving up two singles and striking out three without walking a batter. "Everything feels good with my arm, [it] was good out there. I just want to show people that I'm healthy and I can throw hard," Alcantara said after the outing. The 29-year-old righty hasn't pitched in an MLB game since September 2023, missing all of 2024 due to Tommy John surgery, but he appears fully recovered and on track to take the bump for the Marlins on Opening Day. The Tigers' Tarik Skubal, who won the AL Cy Young in 2024, is the only other starting pitcher to light up a radar gun for triple digits so far this spring.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Effective in first spring start

Alcantara allowed one hit and struck out one in a scoreless inning during Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets. The right-hander touched 99 mph and threw 13 of 17 pitches for strikes in his first game action since undergoing Tommy John surgery in October of 2023. Alcantara has already been announced as Miami's Opening Day starter for the March 27 game against the Pirates. Craig Mish of the Miami Herald doesn't expect the 29-year-old to have any pitching restrictions this season despite it being his first year back from the procedure.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Confirmed as Opening Day starter

Alcantara will be the Marlins' Opening Day starter on March 27 versus the Pirates, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. He'll likely be opposed by Paul Skenes, although the Pirates have not officially announced their Opening Day starter yet. The Marlins are sure to limit Alcantara's workload to some degree in his first season back from Tommy John surgery, but he's more than 16 months removed from the operation and was the only real option to take the ball Opening Day.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Likely to get Opening Day nod

Alcantara (elbow) is expected to be ready to take the mound Opening Day, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports. The 29-year-old right-hander didn't pitch at all in 2024 after undergoing Tommy John surgery the prior October, but he was facing live hitters last September and should have no restrictions when spring training begins. Alcantara won the NL Cy Young Award in 2022 on the strength of a 2.28 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 207:50 K:BB over 228.2 innings, but he'll carry plenty of risk as a fantasy asset this season until he can demonstrate he's fully recovered from the surgery and has something close to his pre-injury command and control.

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Throws live batting practice

Alcantara (elbow) threw live batting practice at LoanDepot Park on Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Alcantara faced batters for the first time since he underwent Tommy John surgery Oct. 6, 2023. The right-hander's rehab from the operation has moved along swimmingly thus far, and he should be ready to roll for the start of spring training.
