  • Padres' Tyler Wade: On bench against righty

Wade is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. Even with Jackson Merrill's (concussion) placement on the 7-day injured list Sunday opening up an extra spot in the outfield, the lefty-hitting Wade will be bypassed for a start as the Padres go with the right-handed-hitting Brandon Lockridge in center field against Arizona right-hander Merrill Kelly. Wade has now sat in three of the Padres' last four matchups with right-handers, and his outlook for playing time likely won't improve in the near future with Jason Heyward (oblique) due back from the IL soon.

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Moving to bench Wednesday

Wade is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. Wade had started each of the last three games in left field and went 2-for-7 with a triple and three RBI, but he'll give way to Gavin Sheets while Xander Bogaerts gets a day out of the infield and serves as the Padres' designated hitter. Until Jason Heyward (oblique) returns from the injured list, Wade could serve as the Padres' primary option in left field, at least against right-handed pitching.

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Sitting against lefty

Wade is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates. Though he'll take a seat for the second day in a row while the Pirates send another lefty (Andrew Heaney) to the bump, Wade had gained traction of late in the Padres' everyday lineup against righties. He started in either left or right field in each of the Padres' previous three matchups with righties and could end up holding down a strong-side platoon role until Jason Heyward (oblique) returns from the injured list.

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Set to lose playing time

Wade is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Yankees, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Wade had started in 15 of the Padres' previous 17 games, with most of his playing time coming in center field. He'll be ticketed for a backup role in the outfield moving forward after the Padres welcomed Jackson Merrill back from the injured list Tuesday, and Wade's opportunities to play in the middle infield will also soon become limited with Jake Cronenworth (rib) on track to be activated this weekend.

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Idle against lefty

Wade is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates. San Diego is stocking up on extra right-handed bats to counter southpaw Andrew Heaney, so the lefty-hitting Wade will hit the bench for the second day in a row while Brandon Lockridge gets another start in center field. Both Wade and Lockridge could see their opportunities dwindle during the upcoming week, as Jackson Merrill (hamstring) is on track to return from the 10-day injured list.

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Starting Monday vs. Cubs

Wade is starting in center field and batting eighth against the Cubs on Monday. Wade appears to be San Diego's top option at center field with Jackson Merrill (hamstring) and Brandon Lockridge (hamstring) both on the 10-day injured list. Wade will make his first major-league start of the season Monday after filling in as a defensive substitute twice during the weekend series against the Rockies. The 30-year-old appeared in 90 regular-season games for the Padres in 2024, slashing .217/.285/.239 with eight stolen bases, 28 runs scored and eight RBI across 155 plate appearances.

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Joins active roster

The Padres selected Wade's contract from Triple-A El Paso on Friday. With Jake Cronenworth (rib) headed for the injured list, the Padres will bring Wade back onto their major-league roster as infield depth. The 30-year-old appeared in 90 games for San Diego last season, slashing .217/.285/.239 with eight RBI and eight steals across 155 plate appearances. Matt Waldron (oblique) was transferred to the 60-day IL in a corresponding move.

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Remains in organization

Wade cleared waivers Tuesday and was outrighted to Triple-A El Paso. Wade was designated for assignment last Thursday after losing his spot on the 40-man roster to Jose Iglesias. After clearing waivers, Wade will stick around in the organization as a member of the Triple-A club. He logged 155 plate appearances over 90 games for the Padres in 2024, slashing .217/.285/.239 with no home runs and eight stolen bases.

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Removed from 40-man roster

The Padres designated Wade for assignment Thursday. Wade turned in a .524 OPS over 90 games with San Diego last season, but the Padres valued him mostly for his ability to play three infield spots and all three outfield positions. His versatility wasn't enough to win him a spot on the Opening Day roster, as Jose Iglesias is capable of providing similar defensive coverage in the infield while bringing a more potent bat to the table.

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Swats spring homer

Wade went 2-for-3 with a home run, three total RBI and a walk in Friday's Cactus League victory against the Cubs. Wade plated three of San Diego's five runs, laying down an RBI bunt single in the fourth inning and slugging a two-run shot to right field in the sixth. The first of the two hits was more in line with Wade's skill set, as he ranked in the 85th percentile in sprint speed last year and has just seven home runs over eight big-league regular seasons. Wade has a .205/.279/.333 slash line this spring as he competes for a roster spot as a utility man for the Padres.

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Avoids arbitration

Wade signed a one-year, $900,000 contract with the Padres on Friday to avoid arbitration, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Wade struggled at the big-league level in 2024, slashing just .217/.285/.239 across 155 plate appearances. However, the Padres will keep him around for another year to serve as bench depth, and the 29-year-old will earn a $50,000 raise in the process.

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Sitting third straight

Wade is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Mets. Wade got the first crack at shortstop duties following Ha-Seong Kim's (shoulder) injury but didn't capitalize on the opportunity, going 0-for-11 at the dish. He'll yield to Mason McCoy for a third consecutive contest Saturday and it appears as though Wade has been usurped by McCoy as the Padres' temporary starting shortstop.

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Sitting Friday

Wade isn't in the Padres' lineup for Friday's game against the Mets. Wade has gone 0-for-11 over his last four contests, and he'll sit down for a second consecutive game. Mason McCoy picks up another start at shortstop in place of the injured Ha-Seong Kim (shoulder).

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Getting Thursday off

Wade isn't in the Padres' lineup for Thursday's game against the Mets. After going 0-for-11 over his last four games while filling in for Ha-Seong Kim (shoulder), Wade will get a breather Thursday as Mason McCoy starts at shortstop and bats ninth.

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Filling in for injured Kim

Wade will start at shortstop and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Twins, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Wade is in the lineup for a third straight game, as the Padres appear to have settled on him as their primary replacement at shortstop for Ha-Seong Kim (shoulder), who was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. Though he is a competent defender in the middle infield, Wade shouldn't be expected to provide much fantasy value other than the occasional stolen base while he's getting regular playing time. He's batting .231 with no home runs in 138 plate appearances with the Padres in 2024 and is a lifetime .219/.295/.291 hitter over parts of eight seasons in the big leagues.

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Notches eighth steal

Wade went 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base in Tuesday's 6-0 win against Pittsburgh. Wade was a semi-regular presence in the Padres' lineup at third base for a portion of April while Manny Machado was limited to DH duties, but since the latter returned to the field, Wade has played sporadically. Tuesday marked his first start of the second half, and he did well with the opportunity, registering his first multi-hit game since May 22. Wade has given San Diego speed off the bench with eight steals in nine tries this season, but he's otherwise been a non-factor in fantasy with a .245/.322/.264 slash line, no homers, 21 runs and eight RBI over 121 plate appearances.

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Back on bench after rare start

Wade is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against Atlanta. Wade will head back to the bench for the Padres' final game before the All-Star break after he picked up his first start since July 4 in Saturday's 4-0 win. While filling in at shortstop for a resting Ha-Seong Kim, Wade went 1-for-2 with a run scored and his seventh stolen base of the season. Wade's playing time will likely remain light moving forward, with most of his opportunities coming as a late-inning defensive replacement or pinch runner.

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Makes start in left field

Wade was the Padres' starting left fielder in Thursday's loss against Colorado and went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run and a stolen base. Wade got his first look in the outfield this season -- previously, all of his defensive work had come at either third or second base. The veteran has plenty of outfield experience in his career, logging at least a handful of games there in every campaign except 2020. Wade's versatility could help him continue to start semi-regularly even as Eguy Rosario gets more reps at third base. Rosario has started at the hot corner in three of San Diego's past four contests, with Thursday's game being particularly notable as the Rockies started a right-handed pitcher.

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Won't start Wednesday

Wade is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's matchup against the Rockies. As a lefty-hitter, Wade will hand off the start to righty-hitting Eguy Rosario at third base as southpaw Ty Blach takes the mound. Wade has seen the majority of playing time at third base with 16 starts out of 26 games this season, due to Manny Machado being limited to serving as the designated hitter as he continues to recover from an offseason elbow injury.

  • Padres' Tyler Wade: Registers third steal

Wade went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a stolen base Saturday in a loss to the Dodgers. Wade knocked in a run with a seventh-inning single and proceeded to steal second base but was stranded there. The theft was his third of the campaign, second-most on the Padres behind Ha-Seong Kim. Wade has 82nd-percentile sprint speed and has swiped as many as 17 bags in an MLB season (in 2021 with the Yankees), so he could be a sneaky source of steals while he's playing regularly. However, he'll almost certainly lose playing time once Manny Machado -- who so far has been limited to DH duties while recovering from offseason elbow surgery -- returns to playing the field.
