  • Red Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Signs minors deal with Boston

Grandal signed a minor-league contract with the Red Sox on Thursday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

Grandal spent all of last year with the Pirates, where he slashed .228/.304/.400 with nine homers and 27 RBI across 243 plate appearances. The Red Sox are a bit short on catcher depth now that Connor Wong (finger) is on the IL, so they'll bring in Grandal to give them a bit more security behind the plate. The 36-year-old veteran will presumably report to Triple-A Worcester and may be able to earn a big-league spot with a hot start in the minors.

  • Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Slugs ninth homer

Grandal went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored in Saturday's 9-4 win over the Yankees.

The veteran catcher got the Pirates' offense going with a solo shot off Luis Gil in the second inning, one of five long balls by Pittsburgh on the afternoon. It's Grandal's first multi-hit performance since Aug. 21, and his first three-hit effort since Aug. 4. On the season, the 35-year-old sports a .228/.304/.400 slash line with nine homers and 27 RBI in 215 plate appearances.

  • Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Starting, but likely to lose work

Grandal will start at catcher and bat seventh in Monday's game against the Marlins.

Though he's included in the starting nine Monday, Grandal is expected to move into the No. 2 role at catcher after the Pirates reinstated top backstop Joey Bart from the injured list Friday. Grandal is slashing .333/.469/.569 since the beginning of August, but his .681 OPS on the season still lags well behind Bart's mark of .848.

  • Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Eight-game hitting streak

Grandal went 1-for-2 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored Thursday against the Nationals.

Grandal has started seven of 12 games behind the plate since Joey Bart (hamstring) went down, and he's enjoyed a productive two-week stretch. He has an eight-game hitting streak, during which he's gone 9-for-24 with a pair of homers, four RBI and six runs scored.

  • Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Taking seat Sunday

Grandal is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians.

Grandal will hit the bench for a second straight day as the Pirates give youngster Henry Davis another turn behind the dish. The two will likely be deployed in a fairly even timeshare behind the plate during the final month of the season.

The catcher has a poor .184/.221/.319 slash line with 18 RBI, 12 runs scored and one stolen base over 150 plate appearances. Barring a drastic improvement in performance, Grandal figures to remain in the backup catcher role behind Joey Bart.

Grandal is absent from the lineup for Monday's game versus the Mets.

Grandal has now taken a seat for three straight contests while Joey Bart has handled the catching duties. His first two absences from the lineup came against left-handers, but Grandal will hit the bench Monday against right-hander Christian Scott. • Pirates' Yasmani Grandal: Sitting in second straight game

Grandal is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets.

Grandal will take a seat for the second day in a row while Joey Bart garners another start behind the dish. Though Grandal has been the Pirates' nominal No. 1 catcher when available this season, he's slashed a lowly .182/.213/.298 over 128 plate appearances on the campaign. In light of his struggles, Grandal could be falling into more of a timeshare with Bart.

Grandal went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and two runs scored Friday against the Mets.

It was also just his fourth multi-hit performance of the campaign. Despite his struggles, Grandal remains a fixture in the lineup, having started five of Pittsburgh's last seven games.
