NHL Player News

  • Lightning's Jake Guentzel: Exits practice early

Guentzel was unable to finish practice Tuesday and is being evaluated for an undisclosed injury, Eduardo A. Encina of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Guentzel's early exit from practice may not be a significant issue considering the team doesn't play again until Thursday's matchup with San Jose, but fantasy players will want to monitor the situation nonetheless. With Nikita Kucherov (undisclosed) also dealing with an injury, the Bolts could be in danger of missing two of their first-line forwards against the Sharks.

  • Cody Glass C | PIT

Penguins' Cody Glass: Activated off injured reserve

Glass (concussion) was taken off injured reserve Tuesday.

A previous report indicated that Glass wasn't ready to play Tuesday, so while he may be medically cleared, he shouldn't be expected back in the lineup. There is plenty of competition for forward spots right now, especially after the team added Philip Tomasino from Nashville on Nov. 25. Whenever Glass does get into the lineup, he figures to slide into a bottom-six role.

  • Islanders' Casey Cizikas: Game-time call

Cizikas (undisclosed) will be a game-time decision for Tuesday's matchup against Montreal, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.

After participating in Tuesday's practice, Cizikas was absent from Monday's morning skate. Jean-Gabriel Pageau (lower body) will also be a game-time call versus the Canadiens, but he is seemingly on the more probable side of playing following a two-game absence. If Cizikas sits out Tuesday's game, Pierre Engvall may play, or the Islanders could go with 11 forwards and seven defensemen.

  • Stars' Justin Hryckowian: Sent back to minors

Hryckowian was reassigned to AHL Texas on Tuesday.

Hryckowian didn't play during his recent stint in the NHL but could still be recalled to serve as an emergency depth option ahead of Wednesday's clash with the Kings. Until Tyler Seguin (lower body) is ready to return, the Stars may continue to move forward up and down between levels to be available as needed.

  • Cody Glass C | PIT

Penguins' Cody Glass: Won't play Tuesday

Glass (concussion) will not be available against the Panthers on Tuesday, Penguins play-by-play announcer Josh Getzoff relays.

Glass participated in Tuesday morning's optional skate, but he's considered day-to-day at this time. The Manitoba native has not suited up since Nov. 7 against the Hurricanes. Glass should retain a spot in the bottom six once given the all-clear.

  • Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews: Scores first goal since return

Matthews scored a goal on three shots and added three hits, two PIM, one blocked shots and a plus-2 rating in Monday's 4-1 win over Chicago.

The 27-year-old superstar opened the scoring late in the first period, converting a slick feed from William Nylander that left Matthews all alone in front of Arvid Soderblom. It was his first goal, and third point, in two appearances since returning from a nine-game absence due to an upper-body injury, and on the season Matthews has six goals and 14 points in 15 contests.

  • Hockey Club's Nick Schmaltz: Scores in loss to Dallas

Schmaltz scored a goal in Monday's 2-1 loss to Dallas.

Schmaltz found the back of the net 6:57 into the third period and denying Casey DeSmith the possibility of a shutout. Still, the goal wasn't enough to mount a comeback. Schmaltz has scored three goals in his last two outings after not doing so in his first 23 outings, though he did deliver 17 assists in that 23-game stretch.

  • Jack Hughes C | NJ

Devils' Jack Hughes: Lights lamp twice in win

Hughes scored two goals, one on the power play, and he added an assist with the man advantage in Monday's 5-1 win over the Rangers.

He also fired a game-high eight shots on net with a plus-2 rating. All of Hughes' scoring game in the second period, and the 23-year-old center has reeled off three straight multi-point efforts. On the season, Hughes has delivered 33 points (11 goals, 22 helpers) in 28 contests, tying him with Mitch Marner for 10th in the NHL scoring race.

  • Jakub Lauko C | MIN

Wild's Jakub Lauko: Lands on injured reserve

Lauko (lower body) was placed on injured reserve by Minnesota on Tuesday.

Lauko's timeline doesn't change with his move to IR, though it does officially rule him out against the Canucks on Tuesday. Considering the 24-year-old winger was mired in an 11-game pointless streak prior to getting hurt, few fantasy players figure to be impacted by his continued absence. Recently recalled Liam Ohgren could get an opportunity to play while Lauko is shelved -- though Ben Jones has been benefitting most from Lauko's injury thus far.

  • Ross Colton C | COL

Avalanche's Ross Colton: Shifts to LTIR

Colton (foot) was placed on long-term injured reserve Monday, per PuckPedia.

This transaction allows Colorado to add Colton's $4 million annual salary as cap space. Colton resumed skating last week, and head coach Jared Bednar said the forward could be available at some point during the club's upcoming five-game road trip. The 28-year-old Colton accumulated eight goals and an assist over 10 appearances before getting injured.
